The Humane Society Of The United States.
The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. HSUS’ work goes beyond supporting the local animal shelters in doing their work. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Today in the world, there are a thousand of animal species. The main objective of the HSUS is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. HSUS does not only work in the U.S but has extended globally with some of its missions being to rescue sea animals. Some of the animals the organization has participated in rescuing have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. However, these are some of the activities because the list is long.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has also been in the forefront in pushing for pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. The organization also thinks about the welfare of backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice and raccoons by educating homeowners of how to peacefully coexist with them.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first one was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals which was founded in 1886. This was the first organization to advocate for animal rights. More other organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. The first work of HSUS was to push for the de legislation of law that required animal shelters to turn over animals to be used for research work. Due to the campaign which have been carried out by the organization, the U.S government has passed legislation that are meant to protect animals. The wide variety of legislation range from those that protect species which are endangered to those that condemn inhuman treatment of animals.
